How to write a UCAS personal statement: the new 3-question format and tips

Applications for undergraduate study in the UK go through UCAS, and the personal statement is one of the most important parts. Universities use it to assess your interest in and readiness for the course.

The new format: 3 questions

From 2026 entry, the personal statement is written as answers to three questions instead of a free-form essay:

1. Why do you want to study this course or subject?

2. How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?

3. What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

The total limit remains 4,000 characters (including spaces), with a minimum length for each answer. Check the latest requirements on the official UCAS website.

Writing plan

  • Question 1: show the concrete source of your interest — a book, project or observation.
  • Question 2: subjects, projects, olympiads, research — explain the link to the course.
  • Question 3: volunteering, work experience, courses, hobbies — show what you learned.

Signs of a strong statement

  • Concrete examples, not general statements
  • Not "what I did" but "what I learned and how I developed"
  • Course focus — one statement goes to all 5 choices, so the courses should be similar
  • Sincere, clear language

Common mistakes

  • Opening with a quote and clichés
  • Listing every achievement
  • Naming a university (the statement goes to all universities)
  • Using someone else's text or AI-written text as is — UCAS checks for similarity
