The German blocked account (Sperrkonto): proof of funds for a student visa
The blocked account (Sperrkonto) for a German student visa: why it is needed, how much to deposit, how to open one and how monthly withdrawals work.

One of the key requirements for a German student visa is proof of funds. The most common way to show it is a blocked account — Sperrkonto.
What is a Sperrkonto?
It is a special bank account in Germany. The student deposits a year's living costs in advance and, after arriving in Germany, can withdraw only up to a set monthly limit. This shows the embassy that the student can support themselves during their studies.
How much must be deposited?
The amount is set by the German government and is raised periodically. For example, the 2025 requirement was €11,904 per year (€992 per month). Always check the current amount on the German embassy's official website before applying. Provider service fees are paid on top.
How to open one
Accounts are now mainly opened through online providers (e.g. Fintiba, Expatrio, Coracle):
- Apply online on the provider's website.
- Verify your passport and identity.
- Send the required amount by international transfer.
- The provider issues a blocking confirmation — this document is added to the visa application.
Using the account in Germany
After arrival you activate the account, and each month money up to the set limit is transferred to your current account.
Alternatives to a Sperrkonto
- Verpflichtungserklärung — a formal guarantee from a person living in Germany
- Scholarship confirmation — e.g. DAAD or another official scholarship
- In some cases, proof of parents' income
Check the embassy's requirements for which options are accepted.
