Studying in South Korea 2026: universities, costs and admission requirements

South Korea's strong universities in technology, engineering and business have been attracting more Azerbaijani students in recent years. This article explains the key steps of studying in Korea briefly and practically.

Why Korea?

  • Links with technology and industry: engineering and IT are strong in the home of companies like Samsung, Hyundai and LG.
  • English-taught programmes: there are many English-taught programmes, especially at master's level.
  • Scholarships: the government's GKS scholarship and universities' own scholarships are available.
  • Safe, modern environment: transport and student infrastructure are well developed in major cities.

Well-known universities

Seoul National University, KAIST, Yonsei University, Korea University, POSTECH and Sungkyunkwan University are the Korean universities most visible in international rankings.

Language of instruction and tests

  • English-taught programmes usually require IELTS or TOEFL.
  • Korean-taught programmes require a TOPIK certificate (often level 3–4 or higher).
  • Some students first spend a year learning Korean at a university language institute.

Estimated costs

Tuition depends on whether the university is public or private and on the field. Fees are usually lower at public universities and higher at private ones and in engineering or medicine. Living costs in Seoul are higher than in other cities. Always check exact fees on each university's official website.

Academic calendar and applications

The Korean academic year mainly starts in March (spring semester) and September (autumn semester). Applications usually open 5–7 months before the semester.

Visa

Bachelor's and master's students receive a D-2 student visa. An admission letter, proof of funds and academic documents are the main requirements. Students may work part-time under certain conditions and with permission.

Scholarships

The best-known programme is the Korean government's GKS scholarship. More: Korea GKS and Japan MEXT scholarships.
