How to prepare for a student visa interview: questions and answer principles

Some countries require an interview for a student visa. An interview can look frightening, but good preparation changes a lot. In this article we explain the general principles of preparation.

Each country's visa rules differ and can change. Check the official embassy or consulate page. This article is not legal advice or a visa guarantee.

What is checked in the interview?

The consular officer mainly tries to understand three things:

  1. Your study purpose: why did you choose this programme and this country?
  2. Your financial capacity: how will you pay tuition and living costs?
  3. Intention to return: what are your plans after your studies?

Typical question types

  • Why do you want to study in this country and at this university?
  • Why did you choose this major?
  • Who is funding your education?
  • What do you plan to do after your studies?
  • Where are your family and ties?

Preparation steps

  1. Collect documents: offer letter, passport, financial documents, language certificate, academic documents.
  2. Form answers yourself: explain in your own words, not a memorised text.
  3. Know the programme well: the name of the university and major, duration, main subjects.
  4. Be able to explain the financial plan: figures and sources must match the documents.
  5. Practise: hold a mock interview with a friend or a counsellor.

When answering

  • Answer briefly, clearly and honestly.
  • Listen carefully to the question; if you do not know the answer, do not invent one.
  • Your answers must match the information in the documents.
  • Behave calmly and respectfully.

Common mistakes

  1. Inconsistency between the documents and what is said.
  2. A vague plan.
  3. Being unable to explain the source of funds clearly.
  4. Unprepared or memorised answers.
