Switching to a computer science master's from another major: who can, and how?
Moving into a CS or data master's without a computer science bachelor's: conversion programmes, required skills, a preparation plan and admission tips.
Many students who earned a bachelor's in economics, mathematics, engineering or another field want to move into computer science later. It is possible but requires planned preparation. For general programme types and countries see Informatics and IT studies abroad.
Ways to switch
- Conversion master's programmes: designed for those without a CS bachelor's. Some countries, especially the UK, have such programmes.
- Data and analytics programmes: programmes built on mathematics and statistics may be more open.
- Preparation course or foundation year: some universities require you to take relevant courses first.
- A second bachelor's: long, but can be a suitable way to build a foundation.
Skills you need
- Maths foundation: linear algebra, statistics, probability
- Programming basics: Python or Java
- Algorithmic thinking and problem solving
A 6–12 month preparation plan
- First 2–3 months: Python and programming basics.
- Next months: data structures, algorithms and maths revision.
- In parallel: build 2–3 small projects and publish them on GitHub.
- Online course certificates add value as evidence of knowledge.
Admission tips
- In your motivation letter explain why you want to switch and the strengths of your previous field.
- Prove your commitment with projects and courses.
- Check each university's prerequisites separately, as they differ.
The advantage of your previous field
Knowledge of finance, health, law or biology can be valuable when combined with computer science. For example, data analytics creates demand in these fields.
