Studying in Croatia 2026: Zagreb, Split, medicine programmes, costs and permit
A guide to studying in Croatia: universities of Zagreb, Split and Rijeka, English-taught medicine, costs, Schengen status, admission and residence permit.

Short answer: Croatia is an EU and Schengen country on the Adriatic coast, and some of its universities offer English-taught medicine and other programmes. Most programmes are in Croatian, so the English-taught choice is limited.
Why Croatia?
A European degree, a Mediterranean lifestyle and strong programmes in tourism and maritime fields make Croatia interesting. Living costs are lower than in Western Europe, but rents rise in tourist cities.
Universities
- University of Zagreb — the largest in the country, with an English-taught medicine programme.
- University of Split — medicine and marine sciences.
- University of Rijeka.
- University of Osijek.
- Private colleges — tourism and business.
Language and fees
English-taught programmes are fee-paying, with medicine the most expensive. Croatian-taught study requires language preparation. Check fees with the university.
Admission
- Medicine: school certificate, an entrance exam in biology, chemistry and physics, sometimes an interview.
- Other fields: certificate or diploma, language certificate, motivation letter.
- Recognition of the school certificate may be required. See: document translation and apostille.
Residence permit
After admission you obtain a temporary residence permit for study. An admission document, proof of funds, insurance and accommodation may be required.
Costs
Rent in Zagreb and Split is higher than in other cities, and prices can rise in the summer season. See: housing abroad.
