Studying in Greece 2026: universities, English-taught programmes, costs and visa

Short answer: Greece is an EU and Schengen country, and the number of English-taught programmes at public universities has grown in recent years, especially at master's level. Living costs are lower than in Western Europe, but most bachelor's programmes are still in Greek.

Why Greece?

A long academic tradition, a Mediterranean climate, affordable costs and study within Europe make Greece interesting. There are strong programmes in tourism, shipping, archaeology, economics and engineering.

Well-known universities

  • National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
  • Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
  • Athens University of Economics and Business.
  • National Technical University of Athens.
  • Private colleges — often offer joint degrees with foreign universities.

Language of instruction

Part of the master's programmes are in English. English-taught bachelor's programmes at public universities have started to appear in recent years, but their number is limited. Greek-taught programmes require language preparation and a certificate.

Admission

  • Master's: bachelor's degree, transcript, motivation letter, recommendation letters, IELTS or TOEFL.
  • Bachelor's (English-taught): school certificate, language certificate, sometimes an interview.
  • Documents must be translated and certified. See: document translation and apostille.

Costs

English-taught programmes are usually fee-paying, with amounts varying by programme. Rent in Athens is higher than in other cities. Check exact amounts on the university's official page.

Visa and residence permit

After admission you apply for a national study visa, and after arrival for a residence permit. An admission document, proof of funds, insurance and accommodation may be required. More: student insurance abroad.

Watch out with private colleges

Some private colleges in Greece award foreign universities' degrees. Find out in advance which university awards the diploma and the conditions for its recognition in Azerbaijan.
