Study in China and the CSC Scholarship: eligibility and how to apply (2026)

The Chinese Government (CSC) Scholarship for international students: who can apply, what it may cover, Type A vs Type B routes, documents and application steps.

Study in China and the CSC Scholarship: eligibility and how to apply (2026)

Short answer: the Chinese Government (CSC) Scholarship may cover tuition, accommodation, a monthly stipend and basic medical insurance. You apply either through your country's designated channel (Type A) or directly through a university (Type B). Exact conditions and deadlines change every year, so always check the official announcement.

China has become one of the largest providers of scholarships for international students, with English- and Chinese-taught programmes in engineering, medicine, business and more. This guide covers the essentials for bachelor's, master's and PhD applicants.

What is the CSC scholarship?

The China Scholarship Council (CSC) is a partner body of the Chinese Ministry of Education that administers the Chinese Government Scholarship at bachelor's, master's and doctoral level. It can generally include:

  • a tuition waiver;
  • university accommodation or housing support;
  • a monthly living stipend (varies by level);
  • basic medical insurance.

What exactly is covered depends on the programme and the year, so confirm amounts on the official announcement and the university page.

Type A vs Type B

RouteHow it works
Type A (bilateral programme)Selected through the relevant national body or the Chinese embassy, based on a quota
Type B (university programme)You apply directly to a Chinese university, which nominates candidates to CSC

With Type B, the university sets its own requirements and sometimes an earlier deadline than CSC. Follow the international office page of each university you choose.

Who can apply?

  • Non-Chinese citizens in good health.
  • High-school certificate for a bachelor's, a bachelor's degree for a master's, a master's degree for a PhD.
  • Age limits usually apply and are stricter for bachelor's applicants (check each year's announcement).
  • Language proof: IELTS/TOEFL-type evidence for English-taught programmes, and often HSK for Chinese-taught ones.

Typical document list

  1. Passport copy.
  2. Previous diploma and transcript (translated).
  3. Study plan / motivation letter.
  4. Two recommendation letters (master's and PhD).
  5. Language certificate.
  6. Medical examination form, in the format the university or visa centre requires.
  7. For PhD: research proposal and sometimes publications.

The study plan is the most common reason for rejection. Replace generic statements with your specific subject, the lab or professor you target and your plans after graduation. See our guide on how to write a motivation letter.

Application steps

  1. Choose a programme and a CSC-listed university.
  2. Read the university's international office announcement: dates, documents, university code.
  3. Fill in the form in the CSC online system and on the university portal.
  4. Upload documents and submit.
  5. Wait for the result; successful applicants receive an admission letter and a visa application form (JW201/JW202).

Common mistakes

  • Checking only the CSC deadline and not the university deadline.
  • Sending the same study plan to every university.
  • Preparing the language proof at the last moment. See our IELTS vs TOEFL vs Duolingo comparison.
  • Applying to one university only; 3 to 5 options are safer.

Other advantages of studying in China

Tuition and living costs are lower than in many Western countries, and industry links in technology and manufacturing are strong. Learning Chinese can also be a career advantage. To compare costs, read our study abroad budget guide.
