Study in Denmark 2026: universities, applying, tuition and residence permit
Studying in Denmark: research universities, English-taught programmes, applying, tuition, scholarships and residence permit.

Short answer: Denmark is known for its high standard of living, innovative teaching model and English-taught programmes. Students from outside the EU usually pay tuition; application dates, scholarships and residence permit conditions should be checked with official sources.
Teaching at Danish universities is based on discussion, projects and teamwork. Below is a guide to choosing and applying.
Why Denmark?
- Innovative teaching: a project-based approach that encourages independent thinking.
- English-taught programmes: especially at master's level, in technology, design, business and sustainability.
- High standard of living: a safe and well-organised environment, though living costs can be high.
Types of universities
- Research universities: schools such as Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg and the Technical University of Denmark.
- Applied sciences and professional academies: practical, industry-oriented programmes.
How to apply
Bachelor's applications usually go through a national portal, and master's applications through the university's own portal. The bachelor's deadline is usually in early spring and the master's in the early part of the year; dates can change. Typical documents are a diploma or school certificate, transcript, language certificate, CV and motivation letter.
Language requirements
English-taught programmes usually require IELTS or TOEFL.
Tuition and scholarships
Tuition fees apply to students from outside the EU/EEA and depend on the programme. Some universities offer scholarships or fee reductions; conditions differ. See Chevening scholarship and DAAD scholarship for other options.
Residence permit and costs
A residence permit for study is required; proof of funds may be requested. Students' right to work may be limited by the rules: see Part-time work abroad.
