Language certificates for the State Programme: IELTS, TOEFL and what score is needed
Language certificates for State Programme applicants: IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo and other certificates, university requirements, a timeline and common mistakes.
Short answer: The language requirement for the State Programme (DP) is mainly tied to the university you are admitted to: you need whatever certificate and score the university requires, because DP often requires an unconditional admission letter. Always check the official rules to see whether DP has any additional language requirement in the current year.
Which certificates?
- IELTS Academic: the most widely accepted certificate.
- TOEFL iBT: especially at US and some European universities.
- Duolingo English Test: accepted by some universities.
- Certificates in German, French or Turkish for programmes taught in those languages.
What score is needed?
- For a bachelor's, often around IELTS 6.0–6.5.
- For a master's, often around IELTS 6.5–7.0.
- Fields such as law, medicine and media may require higher.
These figures are approximate — the exact requirement is on the programme page, and there may be both an overall score and a minimum per section.
Conditional offers and language
If your language score is not enough, the university may give a conditional offer. For a DP application, an unconditional offer matters, so take the test on time.
Timeline
- Take your first test 6–9 months before applying.
- Leave time for a second attempt if needed.
- Note the certificate's validity period (usually 2 years).
Common mistakes
- Taking the test at the last minute.
- Ignoring the minimum score per section.
- Choosing a certificate the university does not accept.
