How to read your Holland code: what IAS, ECS or SAE mean

What does the three-letter Holland code (for example IAS, ECS, SAE) mean? Letter order, close and distant types, conflicting codes and how to use it when choosing a major.

How to read your Holland code: what IAS, ECS or SAE mean

After the Holland test, the result is usually given as a three-letter code, for example IAS or ECS. In this article we explain what the code means. We wrote about the six types themselves in What is the Holland (RIASEC) test. You can take EDDE Global's major test at test.eddeglobal.az.

Structure of the code

  • First letter: your strongest type. It shows the main direction of your interests.
  • Second letter: your second closest type. It complements the first.
  • Third letter: a type with an additional influence.

For example, the code IAS shows a combination of investigative (I), artistic (A) and social (S) approaches. This person may be comfortable in fields that combine research with creativity and working with people.

Close and distant types

RIASEC is shown as a hexagon. Types next to each other are close (for example R and I, I and A, A and S). Types opposite each other are distant (for example R and S, I and E, A and C). If the letters in your code are close types, the result is considered more consistent. If distant types are combined (for example AC), it shows that your interests are spread across different directions.

What if the code is contradictory

This is not a bad result. It may mean that several different fields attract you. In this case:

  1. Consider the suitable majors for each type separately.
  2. Look for majors that combine both directions. For example, design and technology (A with R/I), business and the social field (E and S).
  3. Check with practical experience which suits you more.

From code to major

A code does not produce a list of careers, it gives direction. In your chosen direction look at the content of specific programmes, admission requirements and future job options. Separate explanations of the six types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, Conventional. After you get your result, see next steps.

Remember

  • The code is not for life. It can change with experience and age.
  • The code measures interests, not ability.
  • A test does not decide for you, it gives direction for thinking.
