College vs university in Canada: what is the difference and which to choose
The difference between colleges and universities in Canada: credentials, length, costs, practical training, post-graduation work permit (PGWP) conditions and which suits whom.

One of the most common questions from students planning to study in Canada is: college or university? Both are government-recognised higher education institutions, but their purpose and format differ.
University
- Degrees: bachelor's (usually 4 years), master's, doctorate
- Focus: academic and theoretical study, research
- For: those planning academic careers, professions such as medicine or law, or a master's
- Cost: usually higher than college
College
- Programmes: certificate (usually 1 year), diploma (2 years), advanced diploma (3 years), postgraduate certificate (1–2 years after a bachelor's); some colleges also offer bachelor's degrees
- Focus: practical, career-oriented training, often with co-op (work experience)
- For: those who want to start work quickly and gain specific job skills
- Cost: often lower than university
Postgraduate certificates
College postgraduate programmes are popular among bachelor's graduates: a practical specialisation in a short time and a path to Canadian work experience.
Work permit (PGWP)
Eligibility for a Post-Graduation Work Permit depends on the programme type, length and the field-of-study requirements introduced in recent years. College programmes in particular may not all be PGWP-eligible. Check the current rules on the official IRCC website before choosing a programme.
Admission and visa
- IELTS/TOEFL (college requirements are often slightly lower)
- School certificate/degree and transcript
- A study permit application — in recent years Canada has capped international student numbers, and a provincial attestation letter may be required
Which to choose?
University for an academic degree and a long-term academic or professional path; college for a fast, practical qualification and quick entry to the job market. PGWP eligibility and your career plan should be decisive.
