What IELTS score do you need for a scholarship?
Language requirements for Chevening, DAAD, Erasmus Mundus, Türkiye Scholarships and others: who sets the IELTS score, when you need it and options without IELTS.
One of the most common questions from scholarship applicants: "What IELTS score do I need?" The answer depends on the scholarship and, above all, on the university and programme.
The main rule: the university usually sets the requirement
Most scholarships don't set their own IELTS threshold — you must meet the language requirement of the programme that admits you. For master's programmes this is usually IELTS 6.0–7.0 (with minimum band scores).
Overview by programme
- Chevening — requires an unconditional university offer; the language requirement is the university's.
- DAAD — the programme's requirement for English-taught courses; some also need German. DAAD
- Erasmus Mundus — each consortium sets its own requirement.
- Fulbright — language level is assessed during the application; TOEFL/IELTS requirements are in the programme rules.
- Türkiye Scholarships — no language certificate needed to apply; a Turkish preparatory year is provided.
- Stipendium Hungaricum, GKS, MEXT, CSC — requirements vary by programme and language of instruction.
Is a higher score an advantage?
Yes. A score above the minimum:
- gives a competitive edge in selection;
- speeds up unconditional admission;
- counts in some university scholarships.
Alternatives to IELTS
TOEFL iBT, the Duolingo English Test, PTE Academic or Cambridge certificates are accepted by many universities. Some programmes also consider previous study in English.
When to take the test
At least 2–3 months before the scholarship deadline — so there is time to retake if results are late or the score isn't enough.
