My test suggested a major: what to do next? A 6-step plan

You have your major test result, what next? A 6-step plan to verify the result, research the major, learn admission requirements and decide.

My test suggested a major: what to do next? A 6-step plan

The major test gave a result and suggested several majors. What now? The result is not a decision, it is a start. The steps below will help you turn this result into real plans. If you have not taken the test yet, you can take EDDE Global's major test at test.eddeglobal.az.

1. Read the result, look at the direction, not the letters

The three-letter code shows your direction of interest. For its meaning see How to read your Holland code.

2. Make a short list of 3–5 majors

From the suggested majors choose those that attract you more. A very wide list makes the decision harder.

3. Research the real content of each major

  • Which subjects are taught in the first 2 years?
  • Is there practical experience?
  • Where do graduates work?

Even if the name of a major is the same, the content can differ depending on the university.

4. Check admission requirements and costs

Language requirements, application deadline, exam or portfolio requirement, tuition and scholarship options change from major to major. Calculate your budget in advance.

5. Check against real life

  • Talk to someone working in that field.
  • Try it with a small project, course or volunteering.
  • Imagine the classes and the working day.

6. Decide and build a plan

Narrow the choice to 1–2 majors, prepare a list of universities and countries and build a schedule for documents and language preparation. For the general framework see How to choose a major.

If you disagree with the result

This is normal. The test measures interests, so the result may feel unfamiliar. Think about your answers again, retake the test after a while or talk to a consultant. To widen your view, see the explanation of the six types: What is the Holland (RIASEC) test.
