Loans for studying abroad: education loans, conditions and risks to consider

Short answer: An education loan is one way to fund study abroad, but it means a long-term debt obligation. Before borrowing, it is important to check scholarship options, the State Programme and affordable countries, and to calculate the total cost of the loan and the monthly payment realistically.

Types of loans

  • Local bank education or consumer loans: in the parent's or student's name; collateral and a guarantor may be required.
  • Foreign lenders: some countries have special education loans for international students, but conditions are strict and a guarantor is often required.
  • University payment plans: paying tuition in instalments — not a loan, but it spreads the burden.

What to watch

  • The annual interest rate and the total amount repayable.
  • Whether repayment starts during or after studies.
  • Collateral, guarantor and insurance requirements.
  • Currency risk: if the loan is in manat and costs are in foreign currency.
  • Early repayment conditions.

Loans and visas

Some countries accept a loan letter as proof of funds, while others require the funds to be in an account. See: proof of funds: bank letter and sponsor letter.

Alternatives before borrowing

Budget plan

Calculate the loan amount based on tuition, living costs, insurance, visa and travel costs.

Frequently asked questions
