Studying nursing abroad: programmes, licensing and job opportunities
Nursing education abroad: bachelor's programmes, language requirements, clinical placements, licensing rules and careers in Europe, the UK and Canada.

Short answer: Nursing is one of the most in-demand professions in many countries. A nursing bachelor's abroad usually lasts 3–4 years, requires extensive clinical placements, and graduates must pass professional registration (licensing) to work in that country. The language requirement is especially high because of direct communication with patients.
Programme features
- Duration: usually a 3–4 year bachelor's.
- About half of the training is clinical practice in hospitals.
- Subjects: anatomy, pharmacology, patient care, public health, ethics.
Choosing a country
- UK: a nursing bachelor's with job opportunities after professional registration.
- Ireland: English-taught nursing programmes. See: studying in Ireland.
- Canada and Australia: high demand for nurses. See: studying in Australia.
- Germany, Finland, Norway: programmes in the local language or vocational training; learning the language is essential.
Admission requirements
- Biology and chemistry on the school certificate.
- A high level of English (sometimes high IELTS scores in each section).
- In some countries an interview, health certificate and criminal record certificate.
- Motivation letter: show your motivation to care for people.
Licensing and work
Graduates must register with the nursing body of their study country. Working in another country with a foreign degree may require an additional exam or registration. See: staying abroad after study.
