Changing university abroad (transfer): credit transfer, conditions and steps

Short answer: Changing university (transfer) is possible, but rules differ by country and university. The key question is whether the courses (credits) you have completed will be recognised at the new university. If you are planning a transfer, start at least 6–9 months ahead.

Who is transfer for?

  • Students who studied one or two years in Azerbaijan and want to continue abroad.
  • Students who want to move from a university abroad to another country or university.
  • Students who want to change their major.

General rules by country

  • USA: transfer is common, and credits are evaluated course by course. Moving from a community college to a university is a popular route.
  • Europe: comparison is made using ECTS credits, and sometimes you are required to start from the first year.
  • UK: direct entry to the second year is possible at some universities, but compatibility between programmes matters. See: UCAS application.

Documents needed

  • An official transcript and course descriptions (syllabi) — the most important documents for credit recognition.
  • School certificate and previous diplomas.
  • Language certificate.
  • Motivation letter: why you are changing and why this university.
  • Sometimes a document from your previous university confirming you are in "good standing".

For translation and certification: document translation and apostille.

Risk of losing credits

Not all credits may be recognised, which means a longer study period. Before applying, ask the university for a preliminary credit evaluation. Losses are greater when you change major.

Visa and funding

If you change university while studying abroad, your student visa conditions must be checked again; some countries require a new visa or permit. Students on a scholarship or state programme should get the funding body's approval before transferring.

Frequently asked questions

Will the courses I took in Azerbaijan count abroad?

Sometimes yes, sometimes partly. It depends on the university's rules and how well the courses match.

Does transferring reduce the chance of free study?

Some scholarships are only for first-year students. Check the programme's conditions.

Note: transfer rules vary by university and country. Before deciding, confirm in writing with the target university's admissions office.
