Finding accommodation abroad: halls, renting and avoiding scams

Student housing abroad: halls vs renting, when to start, deposits and how to avoid scams.

Finding accommodation abroad: halls, renting and avoiding scams

Short answer: Start looking for accommodation abroad as soon as you receive an admission letter. There are three main options: university halls, private student residences and rented rooms or flats. Halls are the safest and simplest choice for the first year, while renting is more flexible but carries more risk.

In big cities, especially Amsterdam, London, Berlin and Paris, student housing is scarce. Students often struggle in the first months because they cannot find a place even after getting admission. Below are the steps to avoid mistakes and ways to protect yourself from scams.

Three main options

OptionAdvantageDrawback
University hallsNear campus, safe, bills usually includedLimited places, apply early
Private student residenceComfortable, furnished, services includedCan be expensive
Rented flat / roomFlexible, can share with flatmatesContract and scam risk, deposit

When to start

  1. Right after your admission letter, check the university’s housing application page. Some universities open it even before admission.
  2. Alongside the visa application, prepare your housing plan; some visas ask for proof of accommodation.
  3. 1–2 months before arrival, secure at least temporary accommodation (a hostel or short-term rental).

How to avoid scams

  • Never transfer a deposit or rent before seeing the property.
  • Be suspicious of listings that look too cheap and too good.
  • Ask for a written contract and read it carefully.
  • Search only on official platforms and reputable agencies.
  • Pay by a traceable method and avoid cash or transfers to personal accounts.

Include in your budget

Besides rent, expect a deposit (often 1–2 months’ rent), utilities, internet and a possible housing application fee.

FAQ

Should I rent before arriving?

Reserve temporary accommodation for at least the first weeks. Signing a long-term lease after arrival, once you have seen the place, is safer.
