Deferring your admission: when it is possible and what to watch for
Can you defer a university offer by a semester or a year? Deferral conditions, deposits, scholarships, visas and points to consider for the State Programme.

Sometimes plans change after an offer letter arrives: the visa is delayed, finances are not ready, or family or health reasons come up. In such cases you can ask the university to defer your admission.
What is a deferral?
A deferral moves the start of your studies to the next intake (usually one semester or one year later) without losing the university's offer.
Does every university agree?
No. The policy depends on the university and programme:
- Some universities readily allow a one-year deferral for bachelor's.
- Some master's programmes do not accept deferrals and require a new application.
- Competitive programmes rarely allow deferrals.
- With a conditional offer, the conditions must still be met.
What to watch for
1. State the reason clearly — submit a formal request and briefly explain why.
2. Deposit — check whether a paid deposit carries over to the next year.
3. Scholarship — university scholarships do not always carry over.
4. Tuition fees — fees may rise the following year.
5. Visa — the new start date will need a new CAS/I-20 or visa document.
6. State Programme — State Programme applications and funding are tied to a specific academic year. Check the rules on the official source (dp.edu.az) before deferring.
Alternatives if a deferral isn't possible
- Reapply for the next intake
- Look at programmes with a January/February intake
- Use a gap year for language preparation and experience
