Bank account and money transfers for students abroad: payments, cards and safety
How students abroad can open a bank account, pay tuition, transfer money from Azerbaijan, use cards and avoid fraud.

Short answer: Before leaving, plan how you will pay tuition, which card you will use for daily spending and how your family will send money. In many countries a local bank account is opened after registration, so you will need some reserve cash and an international card for the first weeks.
How to pay tuition
Universities usually accept bank transfer (SWIFT), an online payment portal or card payment. Each method has a different fee and arrival time. Before paying, check the university's official payment instructions and account details, and beware of fraudulent pages.
A bank account abroad
An account is opened with an admission document, passport, address and sometimes a student permit. Some banks offer student accounts without a monthly fee. In countries such as Germany a blocked account may be required for the visa; check the rule on the official website.
Ways to transfer money
- Bank transfer — official, but the fee and exchange rate may be high.
- Online money transfer services — often a lower fee, but availability and limits from Azerbaijan must be checked in advance.
- Card-to-card transfer — depends on limits and fees.
Compare the exchange rate you get and hidden fees each time.
Cards and cash
Find out from your Azerbaijani bank whether your card works abroad, its limits and its conversion fee. Take a spare card and a small amount of cash, but check the declaration rules for cash at the border.
Budget and proof of funds
The source of the funds shown for a visa must be clear. More: reasons applications are rejected.
Safety
- Do not share card details, PINs and verification codes with anyone.
- Make rent and tuition payments only through official channels.
- Be careful with very cheap dorm or urgent payment ads. More: housing abroad.
