Your first month abroad: a housing plan before and after arrival

A housing plan for a student's first month abroad: temporary accommodation, arrival day, rental papers, address registration and first costs.

Your first month abroad: a housing plan before and after arrival

After admission and a visa, the question that causes the most worry is: where will I stay on the first day? This article does not describe housing types but explains a step-by-step plan matched to your arrival time. For housing types, rental search and scam protection see the housing guide.

4–6 weeks before arrival

  • Check the status of your dormitory confirmation with the university.
  • Match your flight and arrival date with the handover date of the dormitory or landlord.
  • If permanent housing is not yet found, book temporary accommodation (a hostel or short-term rental) for the first 1–2 weeks.

A few days before arrival

  • Keep booking and contract documents both digitally and in print.
  • Agree arrival time and key handover with the landlord or dormitory office.
  • Research the route from the airport to the address in advance.

Arrival day

  • At handover, photograph or film the condition of the room and items and attach them to the written inventory.
  • Check keys, internet and utilities.
  • Keep the handover record (if any).

First week

  • In some countries you must officially register your address. Ask the university's international office about the rule.
  • Check the university's advice on a local SIM card, a transport card and, if needed, a bank account.
  • Find the nearest shop, pharmacy and transport stop.

Costs in the first month

The first month is usually the most expensive: deposit, first rent, transport card, household items and food. Calculate these in advance and keep a reserve.

If something goes wrong

If the housing is not as expected, contact the university's student support or international office immediately. Keep written correspondence.

This article is general information. Check specific rules on the university's official page.
