Is work experience required for a master's? By programme type
Which master's programmes ask for work experience (MBA, some management), which do not. Alternatives for those without experience and how to show it in a motivation letter.
The answer to "do I need work experience to enter a master's?" depends on the type of programme. In this article we explain the main options.
Requirements vary from university to university. Always check the official page of the specific programme.
Programmes that do not require experience
Most academic master's programmes (science, engineering, IT, humanities) admit with a bachelor's degree. The main criteria here are bachelor's grades, a language certificate and a motivation letter. Some universities count an internship or research experience as an advantage.
Programmes that require or recommend experience
- MBA: usually requires several years of work experience, because the programme builds on practical leadership experience.
- Executive programmes: are for mid- and senior-level managers.
- Some management and finance programmes: experience may not be mandatory but is preferred in selection.
- Profession-oriented programmes (for example some in education or healthcare management): may ask for work experience in the field.
What can those without experience do?
- Internship: even a one- or two-month internship strengthens a CV.
- Volunteering and projects: show teamwork and leadership.
- Research work: a thesis or conference participation is valuable for academic programmes.
- Extra courses: certificates show interest in the field.
- Choosing the right programme: instead of an MBA, look at programmes like "MSc in Management" that do not require experience.
How to show it in a motivation letter
Write experience not as a list but linked to what you learned and to the programme's goal. A concrete example: which problem you solved, what you learned and how it connects to the programme you chose.
