January intake: which countries offer it and how to apply?

Most applicants apply for the autumn semester. But some universities also admit for the January or February semester. In this article we explain in general terms how a January intake works.

The admission calendar depends on the university and the programme. The information below is general; check specific dates on the university's official page.

Who is a January intake suitable for?

• Those who could not manage the autumn application in time.
• Those who have not fully prepared their documents (language certificate, school certificate or diploma) yet.
• Those who want to take a preparation or language course first and then start.

In which countries is it more common?

A January or February intake is often found at universities in the UK, Canada, Australia, the USA, Malaysia and some European countries. In some countries (for example Germany) the winter semester is the main semester, so the admission cycle is different. The situation differs by country and programme, and not everywhere has a January intake.

Advantages

1. There is more time left to apply.
2. Sometimes it is easier to find a place on the programme.
3. There is extra time for the preparation stage.

Disadvantages

1. The choice of programmes is smaller than in autumn.
2. Some scholarship and dormitory options may apply only to the autumn intake.
3. If courses are sequential, check the course plan so starting in January does not feel like joining mid-programme.

How does the application go?

1. Check on the university's official page whether the programme has a January intake.
2. Learn the final application date and the required documents.

5. Calculate the financial plan and living costs in advance.

Note

The State Programme and some scholarship programmes work with their own admission calendar, so their conditions for a January semester must be checked separately.
