What is the Holland (RIASEC) test? The 6 types and how to read your result

How does the Holland (RIASEC) test help choose a career and major? The six types explained and how to read your result.

What is the Holland (RIASEC) test? The 6 types and how to read your result

Choosing a major is one of the decisions that raises the most questions. One method that makes it easier is the Holland (RIASEC) test. It shows which activities and work environments are closest to you. You can take EDDE Global's major test at test.eddeglobal.az and see our major selection page for general information.

What is Holland's theory

Psychologist John Holland proposed that people and work environments can be divided into six main types. The core idea is simple: people are more satisfied and productive when they work in an environment that matches their interests. The name RIASEC comes from the initials of the six types.

The six types

  • R, Realistic: hands-on work, technology, tools and outdoor activity. More: Realistic type
  • I, Investigative: analysis, research, science and problem solving. More: Investigative type
  • A, Artistic: art, design, writing and self-expression. More: Artistic type
  • S, Social: helping people, teaching, counselling and teamwork. More: Social type
  • E, Enterprising: leadership, sales, initiative and influencing others. More: Enterprising type
  • C, Conventional: rules, data, reporting and accuracy. More: Conventional type

How to read the result

A test usually shows not one type but a combination of three, for example IAS or ECS. The first letter is your closest type and the others complement it. This three-letter combination is called the Holland code. For a more detailed reading, see How to read your Holland code.

Limits of the test

  • The test measures interests, not ability or success.
  • Results can change with age, experience and your mood at the time.
  • A test does not decide for you, it gives direction for thinking.

So evaluate the result together with the content of the major, admission requirements and future job options. These steps are explained in How to choose a major.

What to do after the test

After you receive your result, explore the directions, look at programme content and talk to a consultant if needed. More: What to do after your test result.
