Studying in Singapore 2026: NUS, NTU, admission, costs and student pass
A guide to studying in Singapore: NUS, NTU and SMU, admission competition, the Tuition Grant and work obligation, living costs and student pass steps.

Short answer: Singapore is one of Asia's strongest education hubs, and universities such as NUS and NTU rank near the top worldwide. Admission is competitive, living costs are high for Asia, and support such as the Tuition Grant is often linked to an obligation to work in Singapore for a certain period.
Why Singapore?
English is the language of instruction, the city is safe and an international business centre. There are strong programmes and industry links in technology, finance, engineering, business and medicine.
Main universities
- National University of Singapore (NUS).
- Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
- Singapore Management University (SMU).
- Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and other public and private institutions.
Admission
Admission is selective. For bachelor's, high school grades, in some cases SAT, A-level or IB results and a motivation letter may be considered. For a master's, a high average grade, a bachelor's degree in a related field and sometimes GRE or GMAT and recommendation letters are required. More: who needs GRE and GMAT.
Tuition and the Tuition Grant
Fees for international students depend on the field. The government may cover part of the fee through a Tuition Grant, in return for which the graduate commits to working for a Singapore company for several years. Conditions can change, so read the agreement carefully.
Living costs
Rent is the biggest expense. University housing may be limited. Food and transport costs can be managed thanks to hawker centres and public transport. Check the exact budget on university and official websites.
Student pass
After admission you apply for a Student's Pass with the Singapore immigration authority. The admission document, passport and health requirements are considered. Work rights are limited; check the rules on the official website.
