Internship interviews abroad: a preparation plan and your first day
Preparing for an internship interview abroad: typical questions, the STAR method, video interviews, follow-up messages and tips for your first day.

Your application succeeded and you were invited to an interview. This article does not explain how to find internships (see the internship guide for that) but covers interview preparation and your first day.
Before the interview
- Collect brief information about the company's activity, products and recent news.
- Read the role requirements and prepare one example from your experience for each requirement.
- Prepare a short 1–2 minute self-introduction.
- Write 2–3 questions to ask the company.
Typical questions
- Tell us about yourself.
- Why this company and this field?
- How did you solve a difficulty in teamwork?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- How do you prioritise tasks when time is limited?
The STAR method
When answering behavioural questions, use four parts:
- Situation: what was the event?
- Task: what was your role?
- Action: what exactly did you do?
- Result: what did you achieve?
Video interviews
- Check internet, camera and microphone in advance.
- Choose a quiet, well-lit and tidy background.
- Look at the camera and do not rush when speaking.
- Join a few minutes before the scheduled time.
Language
When speaking English, being perfect is not important; speaking clearly and calmly is. Practise your answers aloud.
After the interview
Send a short thank-you message within one working day. Recalling one point you discussed gives the message a personal tone.
First day
- Arrive on time and learn the workplace rules.
- Do not hesitate to ask questions, and take notes.
- Ask your supervisor early about expected results.
