Scholarships and financial aid for international students in the USA: need-based, merit and assistantships
Financial support for international students at US universities: need-based aid, merit scholarships, assistantships for master's and PhD, the CSS Profile and application strategy.

Short answer: Study in the USA is expensive, but many universities offer serious financial support to international students. At bachelor's level this is mainly need-based aid and merit scholarships, while at master's and PhD level it is more often teaching and research assistantships.
For a bachelor's
- Need-based aid: awarded according to family finances. Some universities meet full need for international students too, but these universities are highly competitive.
- Merit scholarships: for academic results, SAT/ACT and other achievements; automatically considered at many public and private universities.
- Liberal arts colleges often give generous aid to international students.
- Financial documents often require the CSS Profile or the university's own form.
See: SAT and ACT guide.
For a master's and PhD
- Teaching / Research Assistantship: a tuition waiver and monthly stipend in return for helping with teaching or research.
- Fellowship: full funding without work duties; competition is high.
- Most PhD programmes offer admitted students a full funding package.
- There are also government scholarships such as Fulbright. See: Fulbright scholarship.
Strategy
- Read the university's "international student financial aid" page: does it give aid to international students?
- Balance financial aid against admission chances: apply not only to the strongest universities but also to mid-level universities with generous aid.
- Early applications (Early Decision/Action) can affect financial decisions — read the conditions carefully.

It is possible, but competition is very high. Partial scholarships and assistantships are more common.
How does proof of funds for the visa work?
You must document that you can cover the costs remaining after the scholarship. See: reasons applications are rejected.
Note: financial aid policies vary by university and may be updated every year. Check the university's official page.
