Your first week abroad: a 12-point checklist for new students
What a student studying abroad should do in the first week: registration, residence permit, bank account, SIM card, insurance, orientation and other key steps.

Your first week abroad is both exciting and tiring: a new city, a new language and lots of paperwork. This checklist reminds you what not to forget to make the first days easier.
Before you arrive
1. Copies of documents — take paper and digital copies of your passport, visa, offer letter, insurance and financial documents.
2. Cash and a card for the first days — funds to use until your bank account is open.
3. Accommodation confirmation — address, key collection and check-in times.
In the first week
4. University enrolment — essential to activate your student status; original documents are often checked.
5. Residence permit or police registration — some countries require registration or a residence permit within a set period after arrival. Ask the university's international office about deadlines.
6. Bank account — Student bank account and money transfers abroad.
7. Local SIM card — many registrations need a local number.
8. Health insurance and registration — check that your insurance is active and register with a local doctor if needed.
9. Student card — for the library, transport discounts and campus services.
10. Orientation week — attend the events: useful information and new friends.
11. Timetable and online platforms — check your university email, learning platform and timetable.
12. Budget plan — plan rent, food, transport and other monthly costs.
